Dr. Rajeev Kurele, an Associate Professor at Uttarakhand Ayurveda University, Dehradun, was interviewed by our special correspondent Harishankar Saini on the topics of Ayurveda, Shilajit, and Ayurvedic system of medicines. Here are the key excerpts from the interview:
Question 1: Dr. Rajeev, how do you view the importance of Ayurvedic medicine in today’s modern world?
Answer: Shri Harishankar ji Ayurveda is derived from two words: ‘Ayu’ (life) and ‘Veda’ (knowledge or science). ‘Ayu’ encompasses the body, senses, mind, and soul, and ‘Veda’ means to know or understand scientifically. Therefore, Ayurveda is the science of life, which provides complete health—physical, mental, and spiritual, Social well bieing. Ayurveda is thousands of years old time tested science of life, and it is still highly effective today. In the present day, people are prioritizing natural healing and body balance, and Ayurveda is perfectly suited for this approach. Its principles not only improve physical health but also enhance mental and emotional well-being.
Question 2: How can Ayurveda be more effective compared to modern medical practices?
Answer: Ayurveda’s great sage, Maharishi Sushruta, said, “Sārvathā kriyāyogaḥ nidānam parivarjanam,” first line of treatment remove the cause, which means that treating the root causes of a disease is true healing. Ayurveda focuses on balancing the three harmony of the body eg. 3 doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—and reaching the root cause of the illness. In contrast, modern medicine typically focuses on symptoms. Ayurveda, through its holistic approach, treats the entire body and mind. Moreover, Ayurveda uses plants and natural elements, life style modifications, code n conducts, do & don’ts which offer long-term benefits found useful in chronic body diseased , whereas some Western medications now highly served in acute condition, emergency and surgical conditions, that provide some times temporary relief and may have some side effects.
Question 3: What is Shilajit, what is its importance in Ayurveda, and how is it beneficial to our health?
Answer: Shilajit is a Resinous substance that exudes from rocks in the mountains during the summer due to intense heat. Its Latin name is *Asphaltum Punjabinum. There are four types of Shilajit—golden, silver, copper, and iron. In Ayurveda, Shilajit is considered a Rasayana (rejuvenator) that helps restore energy. It slows down the aging process, enhances strength and stamina, and balances the body’s functions. The fulvic acid and minerals in Shilajit help in improving digestion and boosting immunity.
Question 4: What qualities of Shilajit are mentioned in ancient Ayurvedic texts?
Answer: According to the *Nighantu Bhav Prakash, Shilajit is described as bitter, astringent, a rasayana, and a detoxifier. It helps treat conditions such as cough, Prameha(diabetes), Ashmari( kidney stones), Mutrakrichha ( urinary problems), kshya( tuberculosis), Swas( asthma), Arsh( hemorrhoids), Pandu( anemia), Apasmar( epilepsy), Yogvahi and many other diseases.
Question 5: What scientific research has been done on the benefits of Shilajit?
Answer: Recent scientific studies have confirmed that Shilajit has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging properties. It has been found to improve medhya( brain function), increase energy, and reduce joint pain. Research by scientists like Ghosal, Wilson, Carrasco, Gallando, Guzman, and Maccioni has established Shilajit as a versatile natural antioxidant. It contains compounds like benzoic acid and fulvic acid, along with micro and macro-nutrients, making it an excellent rejuvenating and healing substance.
Question 6: What is the future of Ayurvedic treatments, and are people paying more attention to them now?
Answer: The recent global experience with the COVID-19 pandemic has made people realize the importance of personal immunity and the role of Ayurveda in preventing diseases. Now, the world is looking towards Ayurveda, Yoga, and natural living practices with hope. Ayurveda has become a preferred method for wellness, and people are increasingly drawn to natural and effective treatments. There is a growing awareness about Ayurveda, and it is gaining acceptance as a mainstream alternative medicine, with more people prioritizing dietary changes, lifestyle, and mental peace.
Question 7: How can Ayurveda address physical problems caused by modern lifestyle and stress?
Answer: Ayurveda is based on the balance of the three doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—and emphasizes the balance of diet, sleep, and behavior for optimal health. Ayurveda focuses on lifestyle improvements and adherence to healthy routines. Through Ayurvedic herbs like Brahmi, jyotishmati, Shankhapushpi, Ashwagandha, and proper practices such as Yoga and Pranayama, stress and physical problems can be effectively addressed. Ayurveda believes that the body and mind are deeply interconnected, and by focusing on a balanced diet and lifestyle, we can reach the root cause of ailments.
Question 8: Is Shilajit safe for everyone to consume, or are there any limitations?
Answer: Shilajit is a powerful Ayurvedic substance and should be used with caution. It is available in different forms, including pills, capsules, and resin. It should not be consumed based on advertisements or articles alone; the right dosage must be prescribed by a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner. Overuse of Shilajit can lead to excessive heat in the body and may not be suitable for pregnant women, children, or individuals with certain medical conditions. It is essential to consult a doctor before using it.
Question 9: What steps are being taken to promote education and awareness about Ayurveda?
Answer: Ayurveda is regulated by the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India. The Ministry aims to promote quality education, Quality research, Quaility medicine, conservation cultivation and propagation of medicinal plants, creating awareness among the people for in Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy. At Uttarakhand Ayurveda University, we are also committed to advancing Ayurvedic education. We regularly conduct workshops, seminars, and research projects to raise awareness about Ayurveda. Additionally, we are working to integrate Ayurveda with modern scientific knowledge to reach a broader audience.
Question 10: What message would you like to give to the new generation about Ayurveda?
Answer: We all know “Health is Wealth” . A healthy body houses a healthy mind. Good health is essential for success in any area of life, be it personal or professional. By following the principles of Ayurveda—proper diet, lifestyle, and behavior—one can achieve a balanced and healthy life. I encourage the younger generation to understand the benefits of Ayurveda and incorporate its teachings into their lives. Ayurveda is not just about physical health; it also nurtures mental and emotional well-being, which is crucial in today’s stressful world.
